Introduction
ChordChord is a great, free tool for generating chord progressions on piano. We like to use ChordChord for finding musical inspiration and creating repeating chord progressions to sing over when experimenting with melodies.
ChordChord offers a Premium, paid version that enables you to save tracks to a Library and export MIDI and MP3 files, but many features are available for free, including access to a great blog.
How to Use
First, find a chord progression you like. Remember to write down your chords and use Voice Notes to keep track of your work.
- If you want to play a random chord progression, use the Generate button.
- Change the settings first by selecting Minor or Major Scale and disabling all boxes.
- Press Generate.
- Note: Random chord progressions will generate in the same key unless otherwise noted.
- You can also look up the chord progressions and keys of your favorite songs online and enter those into ChordChord.
- Customize your progression by changing or repeating any of the notes or chord types - ChordChord will show you which notes are available in your selected key.
Next, refine and experiment with your chord progression by toggling each item below one a time until it feels good and inspiring.
- Key: the major or minor scale that is the musical foundation of a piece
- Changing the key will automatically generate a new set of chords.
- You can also create a random chord progressions in the same key by pressing ‘Generate’ (make sure to change the settings first!)
- Arpeggio: a broken up chord where individual notes are struck one by one, rather than played all together
- We recommend using simpler ones like ‘Clean’ to leave space for your lyrics.
- BPM: beats per minute
- Use this toggle to speed up or slow down your chord progression.
- Drums
- We recommend disabling but feel free to experiment.
